Why I chose to play for Nigeria- Ashleigh Plumptre

Super Falcons defender, Ashleigh Plumptre believes there more to the game of football than just the playing and so her choice of nationality was get to know more about about her origin, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The Leicester City player chose to play for Nigeria in 2022 after representing England at youth levels.

The 24-year-old said she made the decision because she wanted to uncover more about her heritage.

She said, “For me, I always say that I have to play football for more than just playing it itself. The same way that I chose to join Leicester because of my hometown’s club.

“With Nigeria, I wanted to uncover more of my heritage that I hadn’t delved into before because my dad is half-Nigerian and half-English.

“My grandad was born in Lagos. But I been brought up very British, so, I want to join the Nigerian team where I got to experience food like this, experience more of the culture, I guess.” Plumptre told Kelly Somers of Optus Sports.

Plumptre is one of the expected names to be listed by Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
