West Brom 1-1 Tottenham: Late Dele Alli Goal Helps Tottenham Maintain Unbeaten Run

Published on: 15 October 2016

Dele Alli scored a late goal to preserve Tottenham's unbeaten record after Nacer Chadli had given West Brom the lead.

Spurs were denied by some excellent keeping from Ben Foster as they had to settle for a point.

Tottenham began the game without their top scorer this season in Son Heung-min and the opening exchanges reflected what many people thought before the game. Spurs dominated possession in the early exchanges as West Brom sat deeper and deeper.

The first thirty minutes followed a simple pattern of Spurs building the ball up the pitch before an attack broke down and they came again. As time went on, frustration began to creep into Spurs' play until about 15 minutes before half time.

Spurs jacked up the tempo before the half was out and were desperately unlucky not to go in ahead at the break. Ben Davies forced Ben Foster into the first real save of the match when he unleashed a left foot drive that Foster did well to save.

Then it was the turn of Dele Alli who again was thwarted by Foster. Eriksen also forced Foster into another save before the half was out as the Baggies held on to go in level at the break.

Half time at the Hawthorns and it's Foster 0 Tottenham 0.

West Brom's most likely source of a goal always looked like coming from a set piece and Gareth McAuley should have put the Baggies ahead after the break. A ball in from a corner came McAuley's way, but he failed to adjust his feet in time.

Spurs then had a moment of concern as Toby Alderweireld was carried off on a stretcher after an innocuous looking fall. He was replaced by Eric Dier.

West Brom grew into the game as time ticked on and managed to get their reward from a corner. Nacer Chadli scored against his former club after James McClean's volley was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Hugo Lloris, who couldn't keep out Chadli's rebound.

Then came the goal that Spurs were looking for to preserve their unbeaten run. After an initial shot by Eriksen was blocked by the Baggies, the ball fell to Alli who then expertly poked the ball into the corner of the goal.

Spurs were buoyed by the goal and Foster again had to produce a final save to to keep out Eriksen's free kick in the game's closing stages.

Alli's late goal maintained Spurs' unbeaten start to the season and their best start since 1990.
