Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today's top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

Riyad Mahrez to Roma - 2.8

It was a deal poised to go through in the summer, but a fee with Leicester couldn't be agreed and Mahrez had to remain at the King Power. Reports from Italy suggest the Rome club will be back in for the Algeria international in January. Contrary to suggestions the Arsenal target had changed agents, his negotiator, Kamel Bengougam, has denied any rift. Roma, fourth in Serie A, will be keen to bolster their attack to challenge for the Champions League places.

Juan Mata to Inter Milan - 2.6

Although he is out of contract in the summer, Manchester United have an option to extend Mata's contract by another 12 months. Yet it hasn't stopped Corriere dello Sport suggesting the Spaniard will be involved in a deal to take Joao Mario from Milan to Manchester. Sending Mata to Italy would reduce the amount Mourinho would have to shell out on the Portugal international and perhaps help the club sign one or two others.

Vincent Janssen to Napoli - 2.1

After flopping at Spurs and not faring much better on loan at Fenerbahce, Janssen could be on the move again next summer according to the Turkish press. With two goals and two assists in 10 league appearances, the Istanbul club are unlikely to lodge a bid suitable for Tottenham to accept and now Napoli are linked with making a move. Injury doubts surround Arkadiusz Milik and Janssen would be seen as a potential alternative at the Stadio San Paolo.

Mohamed Elyounoussi to Southampton - 2.0

In trying to elevate their position from mid-table obscurity to European contenders, Mauricio Pellegrino has been watching the Basel forward in recent weeks. Able to play all across the attack, Elyounoussi has managed 15 goals and 24 assists in 63 games for the Swiss side. The Norwegian international only moved in the summer of 2016 and is contracted until 2021. Basel won't be keen to lose him in January, but after signing him for just under £3 million, a tempting bid might be too difficult to turn down.

Olivier Giroud to AC Milan - 1.8

Still without a Premier League start this campaign, Giroud's role in the Arsenal attack has been minimal. Now, with his France role under threat, there will likely be some movement in January. The Italian press suggest AC Milan are keen, with Rino Gattuso looking to upgrade his frontline with the former Everton target, whether it be a permanent or loan move this winter.
