Tottenham overcome VAR controversy to beat Man City

Steven Bergwijn scored on his debut as Tottenham beat 10-man Manchester City 2-0 to leave Liverpool 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was shown a second yellow card and sent off for a foul on Harry Winks in the 60th minute, as the Spurs midfielder counter-attacked from a City corner.

And moments after the dismissal, Bergwijn volleyed home from just inside the area to give Tottenham the lead in a game packed with controversy and entertainment.

In the 71st minute Spurs doubled their advantage when Son Heung-Min was allowed to turn and shoot on the edge of the area, his shot deflected past Ederson by Fernandinho.

Although the second half was notable for goals the first had been marked by controversy. Raheem Sterling escaped with a yellow card after a late challenge on Dele Alli that could have seen him given his marching orders.

Then, in the 36th minute, referee Mike Dean pointed to the penalty spot for a Serge Aurier foul on Sergio Aguero more than two minutes after it happened.

Ilkay Gundogan's spot-kick was saved by Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal but as Sterling raced for the rebound he went down when challenged by the Spurs goalkeeper leading to another VAR check.

This time it came back on the side of Tottenham and no penalty was given.
