Thomas Muller says failed Manchester United move was ‘a huge compliment’

Thomas Muller has described Manchester United’s interest in signing him as “a huge compliment” despite the transfer never taking place.

The forward, who now plays for Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, considered leaving Bayern Munich when he was 25.

One factor in his thinking was Louis van Gaal, the manager under whom Muller established himself at the Munich club. Van Gaal was in charge of Manchester United at the time.

However, Muller said he was not disappointed when the move failed to materialise.

He remained with Bayern Munich until 2025, making 756 official appearances for the club and scoring 250 goals.

During his time there, Muller won two Champions League titles and 13 German league titles.
