The ‘real Vinicius’ conspiracy explained: face surgery, tattoos and a new rival at Real Madrid

Published on: 05 October 2026

A bizarre theory that Vinicius Junior disappeared after the 2026 World Cup and was replaced by a lookalike has spread across Brazilian social media, despite there being no evidence that the Real Madrid forward was ever substituted.

Some versions claim the original Vinicius was killed after the tournament, while more elaborate accounts bring in the CIA, the Rothschilds, the global elite, shape-shifters and aliens. The theory has been fuelled by several genuine changes in the player’s appearance and form.

Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the last 16 on 5 July, losing 2-1. Five days later, Vinicius posted an emotional message apologising to supporters and promising to continue fighting. When he appeared publicly in Goiania on 20 July, his chin and jawline looked noticeably different.

Dermatologist Alessandro Alarcao confirmed he had carried out what is known as “facial naturalisation”, involving a correction to the projection of the chin. AS reported that hyaluronic acid had been used, while CNN noted that photographs alone could not establish the full range of products or procedures involved.

The change was real, but it was hardly proof of a double.

Tattoos and social media claims

Tattoos on Vinicius’ leg were clearly visible during the World Cup, yet appeared to have disappeared in footage circulating online in September. One widely shared image was a poor-quality training still in which lighting, sweat and low resolution obscured the tattoos. They can be seen in the full video and in photographs from the match against Australia, including when he took a penalty.

An image claiming to show Vinicius’ stomach tattoos before and after the World Cup had also been altered using generative artificial intelligence.

Italian media said Brazilian internet personality Vo Bahiana, who has about 24 million followers, helped spread the claims. During the World Cup, she had predicted that a giant UFO would abduct Neymar and Vinicius.

The speculation continued partly because events on the pitch appeared to offer material. On 25 July, The Guardian reported that Arsenal were considering a move for Vinicius, whose Real Madrid contract had one year remaining. On 6 August, Real Madrid announced that he had extended his deal until 2032.

His performances had also changed. Vinicius scored four goals and supplied one assist in five World Cup matches, but returned to Real Madrid with one goal and three assists in eight competitive games. He started all three matches on Brazil’s autumn tour, scoring only from the penalty spot in the second meeting with Australia.

UOL reported that Raphinha, Brazil’s regular penalty-taker, had already left the field when the responsibility was deliberately handed to Vinicius. Bruno Guimaraes said the squad wanted to support him, while Vinicius admitted he had been short of confidence. The following day, Ancelotti publicly asked for patience.

Pressure from a teenage team-mate

On 3 October, Brazil beat India 4-0, with Vinicius starting but leaving at half-time without a goal or assist. Indian Express reported that he had three shots and was caught offside four times. Substitute Samuel Lino scored twice. During the match, former player and UOL columnist Walter Casagrande wrote that “this Vinicius is not good enough to start for Brazil”.

Ancelotti gave debuts to eight players during the tour, with only Vinicius and Danilo starting all three games.

At Real Madrid, 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande has added further competition. Real Madrid announced his arrival from Leipzig on 6 August, the same day Vinicius renewed his contract; Diomande signed until 2033. He had also been among Arsenal’s reported attacking targets alongside Vinicius, Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola.

Diomande has made eight appearances, starting two. In the Madrid derby against Atletico, Mourinho replaced Vinicius with him after 54 minutes. AS said the Ivorian gave Real Madrid greater threat, while Mourinho said he could play on Vinicius’ left wing or the right.

Vinicius has still started all eight of Real Madrid’s matches. There is no replacementonly a change in appearance, a loss of confidence and a determined teenage rival.
