Youth talent can be a strange thing in football.
In recent times we've seen the likes of Marcus Rashford and Dele Alli emerge in English football and grab headlines for their stellar performances. But for the most part, young players tend to disappoint, and the "?Guardian's '20 Future Stars to Watch' from 2008 totally proves that point.
To their credit, the Guardian picked out Jordan Henderson and Danny Drinkwater as players to watch, and both midfielders have proved to be relevant picks in the list. Henderson is now Liverpool's captain, while Drinkwater picked up a Premier League crown last season with Leicester. Even now, they're both players who you would like to keep an eye out for.
The list also includes Danny Welbeck, Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Rodwell, Fabian Delph and Jack Wilshere, all of whom have played consistently in the Premier League at some point but have seen their careers stall due to one reason or another.
For the most part, however, the publication got their selections horribly wrong.
Remember John Bostock? The former Tottenham midfielder was tipped for big things after making his professional for Crystal Palace aged just 15, but has since played for Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Second Division, and is currently playing for Lens in France's Ligue 2.
Other names include Henri Lansbury, now at Nottingham Forest, Gavin Hoyte, defender for Barnet, and Josh McEachran, former Chelsea midfielder now at Brentford. Nathan Delfouneso managed 31 Premier League games for Aston Villa but is now at Swindon, while Jose Baxter has been without a club since being released by Sheffield United after testing positive for ecstasy use.
Other lesser known names include Jacob Mellis, Aidan White, Mark Beevers and Michael Woods. The less said about Nile Ranger, who was tipped for "Shearer-esque scoring feats", the better.
