Former Nigerian midfielder Henry Nwosu believes the Super Eagles may struggle at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations if the team fails to go with a creative midfielder.
Nwosu made this known on the backdrop of the team’s inability to create any meaningful passes to the striker in Tuesday’s goalless draw against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Recall that the first friendly game ended 1-0 in favour of Cameroon at the Wiener Neustädter Stadium last week Friday.
Both matches are meant to prepare Nigeria for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, starting with Liberia in September.
However, in an interview with Completesports.com, Nwosu stated that the results of the two international friendly games against Cameroon have highlighted the need for Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr to look into the team’s midfield.
He said that Nigeria’s inability to create any tangible chances for the strikers may prove costly for them if they fail to fix it.
Nwosu noted that the absence of Joe Aribo also showed that the team must search for a replacement in case of any unforeseen circumstances before AFCON.
“I am really worried about the Super Eagles performance against Cameroon, most especially, the midfield, where the players failed to create several goal-scoring chances for the strikers.
“The absence of Aribo simply exposed Nigeria’s midfield, as the trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekharo Etebo, and Alex Iwobi could not supply any killer passes for Paul Onuachu. If the team continues this way, then they will struggle to make any positive impression at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.” Nwosu concluded.
