Nigeria Professional Football League club Sunshine Stars of Akure have confirmed the resignation of former Nigeria international Austin Eguavoen as their head coach.

There had been heavy speculation that the former Super Eagles head coach had resigned in the aftermath of Sunshine’s NPFL home defeat to Plateau United on Wednesday but the club denied the reports.

However, a statement on the club’s website on Friday confirmed Eguavoen’s exit.

“Our management has received and accepted the disengagement notice of coach Austin Eguavoen. The Club appreciates the coach for his time with us,” Sunshine stated.

“The Club wish Austin Eguavoen the best for the future.

“In view of the development the management has appointed former Ass Coach, Akin Olowookere as the Interim Head Coach.

“The former junior international will be assisted by coach Ogunderu Boye. The appointment takes immediate effect.”

Eguavoen was appointed Sunshine Stars’ head coach only in April.

The former Super Eagles captain was in charge of Sunshine Stars in just five league games where he led them to two wins and suffered two defeats.

His last game in charge of Sunshine was on Wednesday where they lost 2-1 at home to league leaders Plateau United.

Sunshine are currently in the relegation zone in the league table in 17th position on 27 points.
