An investigation has been opened into Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka over allegations that he obtained a counterfeit certificate showing he had been vaccinated against coronavirus.
The case was previously reported, and the potential legal consequences have now been outlined by The Touchline, which cited RMC Sport.
If found guilty, Xhaka could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
The Switzerland international has played six matches for Sunderland during the 2026/2027 season, completing 90 minutes in each appearance. He has not registered a goal or an assist.
Xhaka began his career at Basel before going on to play for Borussia Monchengladbach, Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen.
