Sunderland complete loan agreement for Tottenham defender Kevin Danso

Sunderland have completed a loan agreement for Tottenham defender Kevin Danso, with an option to make the move permanent for about €29m.

The transfer will take the 27-year-old Austria international to another Premier League club, with Danso due to undergo a medical with Sunderland on 1 September. The deal has been reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on social media.

Danso joined Tottenham’s defensive ranks but will now continue his career with Sunderland, who are also competing in the Premier League. The agreement allows Sunderland to sign him permanently at the end of the loan spell, with the proposed fee understood to be approximately €29m.

The medical is the next step in completing the move to the club known as the Black Cats. Although the transfer agreement has been completed, Danso must pass the examination before the move can be finalised in full.

Danso made 24 Premier League appearances for Tottenham last season and was shown eight yellow cards. His departure, even on a temporary basis, means he is set to remain in England’s top flight while switching from Tottenham to Sunderland.

Sunderland have made the move with the option of securing the defender on a permanent transfer. The potential €29m fee would allow the club to decide later whether to retain Danso beyond the loan period.

The deal comes after only two rounds of the current Premier League season. Sunderland are 11th in the table at that stage, while Tottenham are second from bottom.

That contrasting early league position provides the immediate context for the move. Sunderland will add a defender who played regularly in the Premier League last season, while Danso will leave Tottenham for another top-flight side.

The Austria international’s record from the previous campaign includes 24 league matches and eight bookings. Those appearances came for Tottenham before the proposed switch to Sunderland was agreed.

Romano’s report confirms that the clubs have concluded the loan arrangement, with the medical scheduled for 1 September. The move is therefore set to see Danso represent Sunderland during the loan spell, with the Black Cats holding the option to buy him for around €29m.

For now, the clubs’ positions after two matches remain unchanged: Sunderland sit 11th and Tottenham are second from bottom. Danso’s medical will determine the final completion of his move from Tottenham to Sunderland.
