Strasbourg secure Werder teenager Karim Coulibaly in €20m transfer

RC Strasbourg have completed the signing of 19-year-old central defender Karim Coulibaly from SV Werder Breme for 20 million euros, beating competition from several leading European clubs.

The transfer was officially concluded on 21 August 2026. As part of the agreement, Werder Breme will also receive 10% of any future fee if Coulibaly is sold.

Coulibaly emerged as one of the players to watch during his season with SV Werder Breme. His performances attracted interest from across Europe, with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Real Madrid among the clubs monitoring his development.

Olympique de Marseille were also following the defender, while Sporting CP and Borussia Dortmund were reported to be interested. Chelsea and Newcastle United were particularly drawn to Coulibaly’s physical qualities.

Despite that competition, Strasbourg made the most decisive move. The Ligue 1 club received backing from BlueCo, the consortium that owns both Chelsea and the Alsatian side, as negotiations progressed.

Coulibaly has signed a contract lasting five seasons, keeping him at Strasbourg until 30 June 2031. The long-term agreement reflects the club’s confidence in his potential and its intention to oversee his development in France.

Strasbourg plan gradual development

The immediate aim is for Coulibaly to continue gaining experience in Ligue 1 and develop without being rushed. Strasbourg believe their environment can provide the defender with the platform needed to make the next step in his career.

BlueCo’s wider strategy could eventually see Coulibaly move to Chelsea if his progress continues. The plan is for him to establish himself at Strasbourg before any possible attempt to integrate him into the first-team squad at the London club.

There is no intention for the defender to leave Strasbourg in the short term. His performances have strengthened the confidence of the club’s management, while his value continues to rise.

The move represents a significant investment for Strasbourg and gives them a highly regarded young defender to build around. It also offers BlueCo the opportunity to develop a player who could become important to Chelsea in the future.

Former Paris Saint-Germain player Amara Diane said: “Karim Coulibaly at PSG would be the choice of early maturity.”

Strasbourg will soon play their ninth match of the French championship against Auxerre.
