Stephan El Shaarawy could continue his career in Italy with Genoa, with the former Roma forward reportedly close to joining the Serie A club as a free agent.
The proposed move has been reported on social media by journalist Nicolo Schira, who says negotiations are taking place between the player and Genoa. Discussions are focused on an employment contract that would run until 2028.
El Shaarawy is available without a transfer fee after his contract with Roma expired last summer. The 33-year-old spent his most recent period in football with the Rome-based club, but is now considering a move to Genoa as he looks for the next stage of his career.
No agreement has been confirmed, although Schira reports that the forward is close to completing the move. If the negotiations reach a successful conclusion, Genoa would become El Shaarawy’s new club after his departure from Roma.
The Italy forward made 20 appearances in the previous Serie A season. Across those matches, he scored one goal and provided two assists.
Those figures are the latest recorded contribution from El Shaarawy at Roma before the end of his contract. His potential switch to Genoa would therefore allow the experienced forward to remain in Italy, while giving him the opportunity to continue playing after becoming a free agent.
The proposed contract length would keep El Shaarawy tied to Genoa until 2028, subject to the agreement being finalised. For now, the two sides remain in talks over the terms of the deal.
The report identifies the move as one being pursued on a free-transfer basis, meaning Genoa would not need to negotiate a fee with Roma. The key issue is instead the agreement between the club and the player over the contract that could run for the next two years.
El Shaarawy’s latest campaign ended with 20 Serie A appearances, one goal and two assists, and his next destination could now be Genoa. Further progress will depend on the outcome of the ongoing discussions between the Italian forward and the Genoese club.
