SPORTEL MONACO 2019

Published on: 23 October 2019

From 21 to 23/10/2019 the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco hosts the Sportel Monaco 2019, a convention for sports marketing and media industry leaders, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Among the many topics, piracy was also discussed.

According to Ruth Hoy, partner at DLA Piper, a multinational law firm, “a study done in the UK last year by the UK Intellectual Property Office said that around about 20% of internet users are accessing illegal streams of sports content. In addition to that, there's more than a million loaded Kodi boxes (a media player available on multiple platforms, which allows users to play files stored locally, such as videos and music, and stream live internet broadcasts and podcasts) out there that also allow illegal access to sports streams”.

Ruth Hoy concluded by saying that "as of April 2018, it was estimated that over 1800 websites and over 5300 domains had been blocked in the EU. Piracy is clearly on the increase and it's something that all of us need to take action and be aware of what we can do what we can't.”
