Spanish Super Cup to leave Saudi Arabia for Istanbul in 2027

The Spanish Super Cup will be staged in Istanbul at the start of 2027 after the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed an agreement to move the competition from Saudi Arabia.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan signed the deal this week, with the tournament set to take place from February 2 to 6. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid will contest the event.

The Spanish Super Cup features the LaLiga and Copa del Rey champions, along with the runners-up from each competition. The 2027 edition will be played across three Istanbul stadiums, which have a combined capacity of approximately 150,000.

The final is scheduled for the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, the home ground of Galatasaray. The venue has a capacity of around 52,000.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will meet in the first semi-final on February 2 at the Chobani Stadium, where Fenerbahce play their home matches.

The second semi-final, between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid, will take place on February 3 at the Tupras Stadium, the home of Besiktas.

The switch follows several weeks of negotiations over a new host for the competition. Saudi Arabia had staged the Spanish Super Cup since 2020, apart from 2021, but will not be able to hold the 2027 edition because it clashes with the Asian Cup.

The move to Istanbul means the tournament will be played in Turkey for the first time under the agreement confirmed by the RFEF. The three-venue format will allow the semi-finals and final to be held at separate stadiums during the five-day competition.

Barcelona’s meeting with Atletico Madrid will open the tournament, before Real Sociedad face Real Madrid the following day. The winners of those two matches will then meet in the final at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.
