Spanish Sports Papers Go to War Over Who Were the Real Heroes of the Champions League Final

Published on: 29 May 2016

Real Madrid's Champions League triumph was celebrated in typical fashion by their newspaper mouthpiece Marca, while rival Barcelona-aligned publication Mundo Deportivo chose not to join in on the celebrations.

The front cover of Marca showed the Real players lifting the trophy in ecstasy with the headline 'Gloria Interminable,' translating as 'Endless Glory' after Zinedine Zidane's men overcame rivals Atletico in a dramatic penalty shootout at the San Siro.

AS used a similar image of goalscoring hero Sergio Ramos lifting the cup, hailing the 'Undecima' - the club's historic 11th win in Europe's premier club competition. Cristiano Ronaldo, who struck the decisive penalty, is quoted as saying he had a vision and specifically requested to take the fifth penalty.

The paper pays tribute to Atletico, who 'gave their souls' and endured a cruel defeat, adding further misery to their 2014 loss to Real in the Champions League final. Atletico coach Diego Simeone is also quoted saying he needs time to think about his future at the club.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona mouthpiece Mundo Deportivo chose to focus on Atletico's defeat, picturing a group of deflated players accompanied by the headline 'Maximum Penalty.' Deportivo claimed Ramos was offside for Real's opener and that Atletico 'did not deserve to lose.'
