Sofiane Boufal has completed a move to Libyan side Al Ittihad, giving the Morocco international a fresh opportunity to revive his career after his departure from Le Havre AC.
The transfer, first reported exclusively by Africafoot, was officially confirmed by Al Ittihad on Monday. Boufal had been without a club since leaving Le Havre AC and will now begin a new chapter in an unfamiliar league.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder previously represented Lille, Celta Vigo and Southampton during a career that has largely been spent in European football. He joined Le Havre AC from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise but had only a brief spell with the Normandy side.
Boufal announced his departure from Le Havre AC last May, opening the way for him to consider his next move. His switch to Al Ittihad means he will continue his career outside Europe and take on a new challenge at a club hoping his experience can strengthen its attacking options.
Al Ittihad turn to Boufal’s experience
Al Ittihad are counting on Boufal’s technical ability and creativity to add greater energy to their forward play. His years at the highest level of European football make him an experienced addition to the Libyan club’s squad.
The move also offers Boufal the chance to secure regular playing time and find greater stability after several changes in recent years. He is now set to write another part of his career away from Europe.
Al Ittihad marked the signing with a presentation video released on the club’s official social media accounts. The announcement adopted an enthusiastic tone as the Libyan side welcomed the Morocco international to his new club.
The video was accompanied by the message: “A great star wears the shirt of history.”
That presentation underlined the importance Al Ittihad attach to Boufal’s arrival. The club will now look to the former Morocco player, known as an Atlas Lion, to bring his talent and attacking qualities to their team in Libya.
