As FIFA head Gianni Infantino appealed with the British government to enable exemptions for players, Serie A stated on Wednesday that it will back clubs that choose not to release players for World Cup duty who would have to quarantine upon their return.

In a brief statement, Serie A expressed its dissatisfaction with "FIFA's decision not to extend exceptions for call-ups to countries where quarantine upon re-entry is mandatory," claiming that it "would create a competitive disparity for the teams that allow their players to travel to those countries."

The news from Italy's top flight comes after England's Premier League said on Tuesday that for September's fixtures, players representing nations on the UK government's red list will be barred from playing, resulting in quarantine upon return.
