Sassuolo DS Giovanni Carnevali has revealed that midfielder Manuel Locatelli turned down a transfer to Arsenal in order to sign for the Seire A giants Juventus.

The 23-year-old Italian was thought to have been on the north London side’s radar after registering four goals and three assists in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign, as well as scoring twice en route to the UEFA Euro 2020 crown with his country.

However, the Bianconeri ultimately won the race for his services on a loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer of 2023, but Giovanni has confirmed that Arsenal’s interest was genuine.

Speaking to La Gazzetta di Modena, the Neroverdi’s CEO said: “Arsenal offered us €40m (£34.1m), but Locatelli’s desire was to go only to Juventus and we did everything to please him.”

He left Sassuolo after scoring seven goals and grabbing 11 assists in 99 appearances for them, while the player reunites with Massimiliano Allegri at the Bianconeri following their stint at AC Milan.
