Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana has joined Sassuolo from Atalanta on a season-long loan, with the Italian club holding an option to buy him permanently.
The 23-year-old’s move brings an end to a period in which several clubs had shown interest in signing him. Sassuolo ultimately reached an agreement with Atalanta to secure the Ghana international’s arrival in the final hours of the transfer window.
The purchase option is understood to be worth €7m, according to Footy-Africa. That figure could rise to €9m, including bonuses, if Sassuolo decide to make Sulemana’s move permanent at the end of the campaign.
Sulemana will now attempt to establish himself in Sassuolo’s midfield and secure regular playing time in Serie A. The club are understood to value his work-rate, his ability to compete in duels and his versatility across the midfield.
His energy and physical presence are expected to add greater intensity to Sassuolo’s engine room. The Ghanaian’s ability to contribute in several midfield roles is also seen as an important part of what he can offer his new side.
The transfer follows interest from clubs in both Italy and abroad. Erzurumspor had opened discussions over a possible move to Turkey, while Torino were also monitoring Sulemana’s situation at Atalanta.
Getafe made a late attempt to sign the midfielder with a proposal in the final hours of the window. Sassuolo, however, presented the more convincing option and completed the agreement with Atalanta.
The loan represents an important opportunity for Sulemana to take the next step in his career. A strong season at Sassuolo could persuade the club to activate the purchase clause and retain him beyond the current campaign.
Sulemana will join a Sassuolo side preparing for their third match of the Italian league season, against Bologna. The fixture will provide an early opportunity for the midfielder to begin competing for a place in the squad, although no indication is given of whether he will feature.
