Roma captain signs one-year extension

Francesco Totti is set to remain at Roma for a remarkable 25th season as he put pen-to-paper on a one-year contract extension on Monday.

Following a public dispute with Giallorossi coach Luciano Spalletti last season, it appeared as though Totti’s time at the Stadio Olimpico was over, only for the 39-year-old to play a prominent role in their late season success.

“It’s a fantastic feeling,” Totti said to Roma’s official website. “I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt – the Roma one – and I think I earned it.

“I’m delighted, because after this year as a player I have another six as a director. As I’ve always told the president and the club as a whole, I preferred to have a specific role such as technical director. They’ve agreed to that and I’m very grateful for it.”

Going on to speak on his form at the end of last season, the Lupi captain admitted that even he could not have anticipated it.

“If you think about what I did it’s not logical,” he said. “Nobody would have expected it, least of all me. Thankfully it did and I was able to contribute to the team finishing in third position. That’s very important, both for me and the club.”
