Rohr Seeks Nigeria’s Help for Benin’s AFCON Hopes

Published on: 16 November 2024

Benin Republic’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, reflected on his team’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, admitting that missed opportunities left him feeling frustrated, Nigeriasoccernet.com gathered.

While the result was fair, he acknowledged that taking advantage of key moments could have changed the outcome. Rohr now looks to his former team, Nigeria, to help secure Benin’s qualification, urging the Super Eagles to defeat Rwanda, while his own side must overcome Libya in their final group match to stay in the race for a spot in the tournament.

Reflecting on the draw, Rohr acknowledged the fairness of the result but rued missed opportunities that could have changed the outcome. "If we had converted our chances at 1-0, the game might have turned out differently," he said.

"We must avoid defeat against Libya, but our approach will be to win, not just play for a draw." Rohr added that Benin will take confidence from the match and will push for a strong performance against Libya in Benghazi.

However, their qualification hopes depend heavily on Nigeria defeating Rwanda in Uyo, which would secure Benin's passage to the 2025 AFCON.

The qualification race remains tight, with Benin in second place with 7 points, just ahead of Rwanda on 5 points. Libya, at the bottom with 4 points, must also win their final match to stay in contention for a spot. The final round of matches will be crucial for all teams involved.
