Real Madrid’s record investment in Yan Diomande is already being questioned after the 19-year-old winger made an underwhelming start to life in Spain.
The Ivory Coast international joined from RB Leipzig for €125m, with a further €15m potentially due in bonuses, taking the possible cost of the deal to €140m. Yet, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Diomande has scored once and provided one assist in his first 10 official appearances.
That return has prompted debate over whether the Madrid club will need to wait longer for its expensive gamble to pay off.
A promising talent under immediate pressure
Diomande arrived with a reputation for his pace, direct running and ability to unsettle opposing defences. Those qualities persuaded Real Madrid to invest heavily in his potential, but his early performances have yet to match the expectations attached to such a sizeable transfer.
He has played 455 minutes across his opening 10 competitive matches, a period in which he has not had enough sustained game time to establish himself as a decisive figure in the team. His attacking numbers remain modest, although they do not provide a complete picture of his contribution.
The winger has shown signs of improvement, but he is still developing his understanding with his new team-mates. At 19, he has considerable room to progress, although the scale of his transfer fee inevitably reduces the patience available to him.
Despite reportedly not yet being at peak physical condition, Diomande is said to have outperformed Vinicius in some measures during the early part of the season. That comparison requires context, however, with playing time, tactical roles and consistency all relevant when assessing the two players’ overall influence.
The Madrid coaching staff must therefore balance his development with the club’s demand for immediate results in La Liga and the Champions League.
A tactical challenge for Mourinho
Diomande’s arrival also raises questions about how Real Madrid should have used its spending. An outlay of €140m could have been divided between two or three players to strengthen several areas and provide greater squad depth.
There is no guarantee that approach would have produced better results. A major signing can prove decisive if a player quickly fulfils the team’s needs, while even a promising acquisition may require months or longer before justifying its price.
For Jose Mourinho, the task is to fit Diomande into an attack that already includes Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe. He must find a way to use the Ivorian’s speed and ability to drive forward without disrupting the responsibilities and combinations of the team’s other attackers.
A gradual integration could help Diomande build confidence and consistency. Excessive pressure surrounding his fee, by contrast, could make the adjustment more difficult.
The next test
There is no reason to reach a final judgement after only a few weeks, particularly with signs of recent progress. The upcoming La Liga fixtures, including the meeting with FC Barcelona, may give Diomande an opportunity to strengthen his position in Real Madrid’s attacking hierarchy.
Real Madrid will next face FC Sevilla in the ninth round of the Spanish league. Diomande will be expected to improve his finishing, perform more consistently and show that he can influence important matches.
The verdict remains premature, but potential alone will not be enough indefinitely. The success of the transfer will depend on how quickly Diomande develops and how effectively Mourinho’s staff create the conditions for him to do so.
