Jose Mourinho has introduced a new set of disciplinary measures at Real Madrid, with players who arrive late for training reportedly facing exclusion from the first-team session, individual gym work and a ban from the club’s next match.
The Portuguese manager has decided to abandon the system of financial penalties previously used by the Madrid club. Under the former arrangement, players could be fined between 100 and 300 euros for being late.
However, Mourinho is understood to have concluded that such sums were not an effective deterrent. Instead, he has opted for a sporting punishment that could have a more immediate impact on a player’s preparation and involvement with the team.
According to The Sun, any Real Madrid player who arrives late for training will no longer be allowed to take part in the session with the main group. The footballer will instead be required to work in the gym and will miss the team’s next fixture.
The measure forms part of a wider tightening of discipline under Mourinho. Rather than relying on fines, the manager’s approach places greater emphasis on players’ access to training and matches.
Mourinho has also strengthened the rules governing the recovery of injured players. Rehabilitation must now take place at Real Madrid’s training complex in Valdebebas, rather than outside the club’s established arrangements.
The coaching staff have further increased their oversight of the squad’s nutrition. Real Madrid players are required to follow dietary recommendations drawn up by the club as part of the revised regime.
The changes apply to several areas of the footballers’ daily responsibilities, including punctuality, injury rehabilitation and diet. They reflect Mourinho’s decision to impose more demanding standards on the Madrid squad, with disciplinary decisions linked directly to training and match participation.
The previous fines of 100 to 300 euros had been the club’s established response to lateness, but Mourinho considered them insufficient. His replacement system means that a player who breaks the punctuality rule could lose the opportunity to train with the first team and be unavailable for the following match.
The report does not identify any player who has already been punished under the new rules. It says only that the measures have been introduced by Mourinho as part of the new disciplinary framework at Real Madrid.
Alongside the action taken against late arrivals, the revised arrangements require injured players to complete their rehabilitation at Valdebebas. The club’s recommendations on nutrition are also now to be followed by the squad under closer supervision from Mourinho’s coaching staff.
