Randy Waldrum steps down as Super Falcons Head Coach

Published on: 13 September 2024

Randy Waldrum has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Super Falcons, citing personal reasons for his departure, Nigeeriasoccernet.com gathered.

Appointed on October 5, 2020, Waldrum’s resignation comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding his wife’s health.

In a letter of resignation submitted on Thursday, Waldrum, aged 67, expressed his decision to step down after a period of personal challenges. "It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons," Waldrum explained.

During his four-year tenure, Waldrum achieved several milestones with the Super Falcons. His leadership saw the team qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they advanced to the Round of 16 before being narrowly eliminated by England in a penalty shootout.

Additionally, Waldrum led the team to secure a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games, ending a 16-year absence from the event.

Waldrum’s resignation allows the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ample time to find a suitable replacement before the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to be held in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

The NFF will now focus on selecting a new head coach who can continue to build on the successes achieved during Waldrum’s tenure.
