Gianluigi Donnarumma is enduring a challenging period with Paris Saint-Germain. The arrival of Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, signed during the summer transfer window, coupled with a series of underwhelming performances, has cast doubt over his status as the team’s undisputed number one. The former AC Milan goalkeeper, often criticised for his footwork and lack of confidence when coming off his line, now faces direct competition that could significantly impact his future at the club.

According to reports from RMC Sport, contract renewal negotiations for Donnarumma—whose current deal expires in June 2026—have been put on hold. The PSG hierarchy has opted to pause discussions following concerns over the Italian goalkeeper’s recent form, which includes conceding five goals from the last seven shots on target faced.

Another sticking point appears to be the salary increase proposed in the new deal, deemed disproportionate to Donnarumma’s performances thus far. This situation creates uncertainty for the 24-year-old, who must now work to regain the trust of head coach Luis Enrique and secure his place as PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper.
