Leeds United are reportedly weighing up a January transfer move for Nigeria international Zaidu Sanusi as they look to strengthen their left-back options, with the defender’s contract situation at FC Porto potentially making a deal more affordable, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
According to Football Insider, the Premier League club believes negotiations could be relatively straightforward if Porto fail to agree a contract extension with the 29-year-old.
Leeds have monitored Sanusi for some time and have reportedly considered signing him during each of the last two transfer windows. The club is keen to provide additional competition for Gabriel Gudmundsson, who arrived in 2025 and has impressed since joining the Whites.
Sanusi’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season, raising the possibility that Porto could consider a January sale rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.
The Nigerian defender started 11 league matches for Porto last season and has already made five starts in the current 2026/27 campaign, underlining his continued involvement with the Portuguese giants.
Having joined Porto in 2020, Sanusi is now in his seventh season at the club. He has also made 29 appearances in the UEFA Champions League and continues to feature in European football’s premier club competition.
His experience at domestic and continental level could appeal to Leeds as they seek to improve their defensive depth while maintaining a measured approach to spending following their return to the Premier League in 2025.
However, any January move is likely to depend on developments in Sanusi’s contract negotiations with Porto. If no agreement is reached, Leeds could attempt to secure the Super Eagles defender for a reduced fee before his existing deal expires.
