According to BBC Sport's Simon Stone, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has triggered a FIFA regulation that allows players to be suspended for five days if they were not freed for the international break.
Chelsea, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United all refused to allow their Brazilian players to go so that they would not be subjected to the UK's obligatory 10-day quarantine when they returned from a red-list nation. The Premier League backed them up in their decision.
According to Melissa Reddy of the Independent, the Premier League teams will challenge FIFA's ruling, claiming unusual circumstances around COVID-19 limitations that made it difficult for their players to fly. The clubs are working with the Premier League, Brazil, the Football Association, and FIFA to find a solution.
Chelsea's Thiago Silva, Manchester United's Fred, Leeds' Raphinha, Liverpool's Alisson, Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino, and Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus and Ederson all face a five-day suspension.
Richarlison was allegedly spared from the punishment by the CBF because Everton released him for Brazil's successful Olympic campaign this summer.
