Having broken their club record to sign Romelu Lukaku in a £97.5millon deal from Inter, the Champions League holders have now turned their attention to signing a new centre-back.

Based on reports from Metro, Sevilla star Kounde is their top target but they have so far been unable to reach an agreement, with the Spanish side demanding his €80m (£68m) release clause is met.

But Chelsea are struggling to stump up the requisite cash, particularly with Sevilla having rejected Kurt Zouma as part of a potential swap deal and the Frenchman having priced himself out of a move to West Ham.

According to Marca, the longer the talks drag on the less likely Chelsea are to sign Kounde due to a clause in the defender’s contract. As it gets closer to the end of the transfer window, Kounde’s release clause increases incrementally until it hits €90m (£77m) by the end of the month.
