Poland began their Women’s U20 World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Argentina at Arena Katowice on Saturday, 5 September 2026, moving temporarily to the top of Group A.
The hosts took control during the opening 45 minutes and showed greater efficiency in front of goal. Their territorial dominance was rewarded in the 26th minute when Oliwia Zwiazek finished to give Poland the lead.
Argentina struggled to respond as Poland continued to dictate the contest. The South American side’s difficulties increased four minutes later when Annika Paz inadvertently turned the ball into her own net, leaving the Albiceleste two goals behind in the 30th minute.
Poland entered the interval in a strong position, having converted their superiority into a substantial advantage. Argentina were left needing a major improvement after the break if they were to recover from the early setback.
Instead, Poland extended their lead in the second half. Maja Zielinska scored the hosts’ third goal, completing a dominant result and putting the opening match of the tournament beyond Argentina’s reach.
Argentina did attempt to test Poland’s defence as the game progressed, but the South American team repeatedly failed to produce the decisive finish. Their efforts in the final third did not lead to a goal, while Poland maintained their advantage through to the end.
The result gives Poland three points and leaves them provisionally first in Group A. Their position may change after the other group fixture between Benin and Mexico.
For Argentina, the defeat represents a difficult start to the competition. Two goals conceded during the first half, including the own goal from Paz, put them under immediate pressure, and they were unable to convert their attacking attempts into a response.
Poland’s performance, by contrast, combined early control with clinical finishing. Zwiazek’s opener established the direction of the match, Paz’s own goal doubled the hosts’ advantage, and Zielinska’s second-half strike confirmed the margin of victory.
The 3-0 scoreline means Poland take the early initiative in Group A, while Benin and Mexico now have the opportunity to influence the shape of the section when they meet. Argentina must recover from their opening defeat after being outplayed for long periods in Katowice.
The match was the first of the Women’s U20 World Cup for both teams, with Poland making full use of home advantage to secure the competition’s early lead in Group A.
