Liverpool could only come away from Newcastle with a 1-1 draw despite Philippe Coutinho netting a superb opener at St James' Park.
Coutinho scored a spectacular effort on the half-hour mark, only for Joselu to equalise for Newcastle a few minutes later, leaving Liverpool seven points adrift of the top.
Liverpool came close to opening the scoring after 23 minutes with former Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum flicking a corner onto the post, before Dejan Lovren saw a shot blocked and Sadio Mane eventually fired wide.
The visitors did manage to break the deadlock seven minutes later with Coutinho picking up the ball on the edge of the area and curling a fine strike into the top corner.
Liverpool's lead only lasted for six minutes with Joselu netting a fortunate equaliser for Newcastle after Joel Matip's tackle inadvertently sent the ball in off his leg.
Jurgen Klopp's side had a chance to move back ahead early into the second half, but Daniel Sturridge's shot was saved by Rob Elliot following a miskick from Ciaran Clark, before Mohamed Salah fired the rebound over.
Dominic Solanke also had a chance to win it late on for Liverpool but his header from Coutinho's cross landed just wide of the target.
