Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Memorial Cup: Orolu LG, Irepodun LG secure Round 16 spots

The Fifth Edition of the Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Memorial Championship began with an unforgettable Matchday one at the Osogbo City Stadium, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

The competition, solely powered by Hon. Bamidele Salam, Representative of Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, aims to celebrate the enduring legacy of Osun State’s first civilian governor, Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.

The day commenced with pomp and ceremony as Rep. Bamidele Salam performed the official kickoff, signaling the start of a competition that embodies unity, sportsmanship, and youthful empowerment.

The opening match delivered an edge-of-your-seat encounter as Orolu LG squared off against Osogbo LG. Right from the whistle, it was clear that both teams were determined to make a statement. Orolu LG struck early with a clinical finish that stunned Osogbo’s defense. But the home team responded with equal fervor, leveling the score with a spectacular goal before the halftime whistle.

 

The second half brought even more drama. Osogbo LG found the back of the net again, raising the hopes of their supporters. Yet, Orolu LG refused to relent, clawing back with an impressive equalizer that silenced the stadium. The match ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw, pushing both teams into a penalty shootout.

The shootout was a nerve-wracking affair, with each player stepping up to take their shot under immense pressure. Orolu LG edged out Osogbo 5-4 in the shootout, booking their place in the Round of 16 and igniting celebrations among their fans.

The second fixture of the day saw Irepodun LG take on Olorunda LG in a more calculated and tactical contest. Both teams were cautious in their approach, knowing that a single mistake could determine their fate. The first half ended goalless, with neither side willing to take unnecessary risks.

In the second half, Irepodun LG upped the tempo and was rewarded late in the game with a decisive goal that broke the deadlock. Their well-organized defense ensured they held on to their slender 1-0 lead until the final whistle, earning them a hard-fought victory and a coveted spot in the Round of 16.

The atmosphere at Osogbo City Stadium was electric, with fans from across Osun State gathering to celebrate not only the beautiful game but also the memory of Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.

On Wednesday, at the Oluwo Stadium, Iwo, Ayedaafe LG will face Ola-Oluwa LG by 11am, while Irewole LG and Isokan LG will battle by 1pm.

On the same day at the Okuku Grammar School Pitch, Ifelodun LG and Ila LG will square up by 9am, Boripe LG and Boluwaduro LG by 11am, while Odo-Otin LG and Ifedayo LG will play by 1pm
