Omagbemi Asserts Women Football In Africa Still Lagging Behind Other Continents

Published on: 21 November 2016

Women’s football in Africa still has a long way to go before teams on the continent can make any real impact on the global stage according to FIFA Technical Study Group member and Super Falcons Coach, Florence Omagbemi.

Nigeria, the most successful team on the continent, have not gone past the quarter-final of the World Cup or Olympic – though the Country has had more world cup appearances (7) than England’s three Lions (4) but have reached the quarter-final three times and finished in third at the last edition.

According to CAF, the Falcons Coach said :

”  It has been a long journey when we started and I can say women’s football in Africa has made great progress. There are a lot of talents but still much to be done.”

Cameroon , who are hosts of the 2016 AWCON, are hoping to challenge Nigeria’s dominance in Africa and have talked up their chances of winning as host. Incidentally, the Lionesses reached the round of 16 at the last World Cup in Canada.
