Okpara Urges FIFA, UEFA to Sanction Racist Abuse Targeting Arokodare

Former Nigeria defender Godwin Okpara has appealed to global football authorities to take firm action against individuals responsible for racist abuse directed at Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Arokodare became the target of offensive messages on social media after missing a penalty in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat to Crystal Palace. The incident sparked widespread concern, with many condemning the discriminatory attacks aimed at the Nigerian forward.

Reacting in an interview with Footy Africa, Okpara expressed disappointment that racism remains an issue in football in 2026. He insisted that both FIFA and UEFA must ensure strict punishment for offenders.

“It’s sad that this is still happening in 2026, and I believe action has to be taken against those responsible,” Okpara said. “Football is a unifying sport, and racism or any form of discrimination should never be allowed in the game.”

The former international went further to suggest lifetime bans for fans found guilty of racist behaviour, stressing that football’s governing bodies must demonstrate zero tolerance. According to him, decisive sanctions are necessary to protect players and preserve the integrity of the sport.

Okpara also addressed Arokodare’s on-field struggles, noting that the striker did not benefit from a full preseason with Wolves, which may have contributed to his inconsistent performances. He urged patience, suggesting the forward should be given more time to settle before discussions about his future arise.

He added that players often rediscover form in different environments, warning that critics may struggle to justify their stance if Arokodare thrives elsewhere.
