Official: AFCON to switch to four-year cycle from 2028

Published on: 22 December 2025

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held every four years from 2028, marking a significant change in the tournament's format, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced the decision on Saturday, citing the need for a more synchronized global football calendar.

Since its inception in 1968, AFCON has been held every two years, with a one-off exception in 2012-2013.

The next edition in 2027 will be held in East Africa, followed by the 2028 tournament, after which the four-year cycle will kick in.

"We have the most exciting new structure for African football," Motsepe said.

"I do what is in the interests of Africa. The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised."

The move aims to align AFCON with other major international tournaments, potentially increasing the competition's prestige and visibility.
