NWFL: "We are already thinking of the Super Six" - Delta Queens Coach

Published on: 16 December 2022

After an impressive start to the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season, head Coach of Delta Queens, Tosan Blackson is already setting his eyes on the top prize.

Delta Queens qualified for the 2022 NWFL Premiership Super Six in Benin City but couldn’t get the league title but bowed to Bayelsa Queens in the race for the title, missing a chance to the CAF Women’s Champions League.

This time, Blankson is optimistic that his side will make the Super Six but his main focus is claiming the league title.

“We are already thinking of the Super Six already. As we are playing now, the Super Six is already in our minds,” Blankson said after his side’s 3-0 win over Royal Queens on Wednesday in a local derby.

“How to win the Super Six is what we are thinking about now.  We know that we will qualify for the Super Six. We are planning towards winning the Super Six.”

Two goals from Mercy Omokwo and Fehintola Mabokanje’s first-half penalty lifted Delta Queens to a 3-0 win over Royal Queens at Asaba Township Stadium, Delta State and Blankson stresses his team’s season ambition.

“The recent games in which we played Royal Queens, we defeated them 3-0 in the FA Cup. At Betsy Obaseki Cup, it ended 2-1 in our favour. We also met at Sheroes Cup and also won 2-0,” he continued.

“They are a good side but they a looking at us like rivals. We are not their rivals but derby as our neighbors. It is when they start giving us the respect that we are their senior sisters that they will start making it.

“We already prepared for the season. As each match comes, we take it. There is stability in the team. They are playing purposeful football. The defence is joining the midfield and the midfield joining the attack. They are playing compactly. When you are playing compactly, it’s difficult for you to concede a goal.”

The win makes it two out of two games for the Asaba-based team after a 2-0 win over Heartland Queens in the previous match week.

The team will next face Osun Babes on Wednesday, October 21, at the Larry Leke Stadium, Elegbo, Osun State.
