NWFL Championship: Heartland, Ibom Angels On The Brink Of Elite League Return

Published on: 18 June 2022

The professional cadre of the Nigeria Women Football League, the Championship 2022 which is also the second tier of the women's football league, will end Sunday, June 19 with a photo finish as five of the eleven clubs participating, have the probability of gaining promotion to the NWFL Premiership League, out of the two tickets available for grabs.

The five clubs with the possibility of grabbing the two slots for promotion include: Heartland Queens of Owerri FC, Dannaz Ladies of Lagos, Moje Queens of Kwara, Ibom Angels of Uyo and Oasis FC of Lagos.

For Heartland Queens playing in Group B, they have the brightest chances to pick the ticket from their group as group winners, if they just record a draw of whatever shade: either goalless or score draw, to give them 13 points, which is unassailable for all the other five teams in Group B.

A win for the Owerri Girls will be an added advantage, which would give them 15 points from five matches, a one hundred percent result in the NWFL Championship 2022 and a sure promotion to the elite NWFL Premiership League.

Heartland Queens of Owerri were two years ago relegated to the NWFL Championship, from the NWFL Premiership due to infractions in the Club Licensing Registration of the club for the season.

The two clubs that violated the Rules of registration; Heartland Queens and Adamawa Queens. Both teams were relegated to the NWFL Championship League as penalty.

While a loss for Heartland Queens against Crystal Stars FC of Bayelsa, won't serve any good for the Bayelsa Girls, but only a huge advantage for fellow group members, Dannaz Ladies of Lagos if they are able to defeat their Sunday's opponent Moje Queens by three goals to nothing.

And if Moje Queens FC of Kwara, in reverse order beat Dannaz Ladies by as much as four goals, the setting of the table will be disrupted as Moje Queens will emerge champions of Group B.

Still in Group B, going into the final day fixtures, Dannaz Ladies FC have 9 points from 4 matches and +6 goal difference, while Moje Queens have 9 points and +4 goal difference also from 4 matches.

In Group A, Ibom Angels of Uyo have one leg in the NWFL Premiership, with a possible promotion ticket if they defeat or play a draw against Honey Badgers FC of Venue state in the final day Fixtures on Sunday at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

Going into the final day fixtures, Ibom Angels have 7 points. A win will give them 10 points, while a draw will earn them eight points, which is still good to emerge the Group A winners and grab the promotion ticket and a return to the NWFL Premiership where they were relegated from last year after falling short at the NWFL Premiership Play Off at the University of Benin, Ugbowo campus, Benin City, Edo State.

Ibom Angels' closest rival for promotion, Oasis Ladies had their dreams of a possible promotion to the elite Premiership League twarted by Dream Stars Ladies of Lagos on Friday, when the Alhaji Abdulrahman Abolore- team defeated and ended Oasis FC dream with a 2-1 win at the Practice Pitch of the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

Dream Stars were better in all departments of the game in that match that earned them a retention in the NWFL Championship for yet another season.

However, for Oasis Ladies to gain promotion to the elite NWFL Premiership League, they must pray that Honey Badgers FC who are third on the table with four points, must defeat Ibom Angels with as much as four unreplied goals in their final day fixtures at 9am at the Main Bowl of the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode. Or Dream Stars Ladies of Lagos defeat Royaltoms Intl FC of Lagos by as much as six unreplied goals in the Sunday's final day fixtures at 12 noon at the Main Bowl of the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The NWFL Championship League will be concluded Sunday afternoon after the final day matches at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The teams that gained promotion from the NWFL Championship to the NWFL Premiership, will officially be announced by the Secretariat of the Nigeria Women Football League on Monday.
