Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has backed his medical team following criticism over the handling of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury during last weekend’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.

The Super Eagles striker collided heavily with a goalpost late in the game and appeared visibly uncomfortable after receiving treatment. Despite his struggles, Awoniyi was allowed to finish the match.

It was later revealed that the Nigerian had suffered a serious abdominal injury, requiring two operations. He was subsequently hospitalized on Monday and is currently recovering.

Nuno, while expressing concern for the player, defended the professionalism of his staff under intense match-day conditions.

“Of course, it’s a tough job. Decisions need to be made swiftly. But we are top professionals, and we must be ready for it,” he said.

“We definitely communicated with the medical staff and engaged in dialogue. We always strive to analyse what happened.

However, we cannot let this stop us. We evaluate the situation as we always do. Above all, our priority is the players’ health.”

The Portuguese coach reiterated that the welfare of players remains the club’s foremost priority, adding that the medical team acted in good faith and continues to perform their roles exceptionally well.

Forest fans and Nigerian supporters alike will now be hoping for a smooth and speedy recovery for Awoniyi, whose presence has been crucial to the team’s attacking line when fit.
