NPFL'23: We suffered laxity and were naive in front goal - Akwa United Coach

Published on: 08 January 2023

Following  their 2-0 loss at the Nest of Champions in the  NPFL 2022/2023 season opener, Akwa United Coach, Deji Ayeni has reacted to the defeat on Sunday.

Ayeni attributed his team's loss to mistakes that could have been avoided especially in the first half of the encounter.

Bendel Insurance had returned after three years and seven months to the league to beat the former champions in the first match of the season.

Imade Osehenkhoe and Ismael Seriki's first-half goals secured the win for Insurance.

”Football is very dynamic, what you bargained for might not be what you will see but I think in the first half we suffered laxity and were naive in front of goals.

It is quite unfortunate that the two goals were a mistake and being the first game a lot of expectations on the team.

The game of football is, either way, today Insurance has got it right and I believe the league is a marathon anything can happen.

We did a bit better in the second half but the god of soccer is not on our side.

He was upbeat of his side returning to winning ways in their next game.

"We will go back and work on our mistakes", he said.

Akwa United will play Enyimba of Aba in their match fixture on Wednesday, 11th January, 2023.
