NPFL: Enyimba, Rangers clash ends abruptly

Published on: 10 June 2024

After 90 minutes and 7 minutes of additional time, the match between Enyimba FC and Rangers International ended abruptly following protest and crowd trouble on Sunday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The highly anticipated Oriental derby had lived up to its billing with jam-packed Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and an electrifying atmosphere until a last penalty call by the referee for the hosts was protested by the visitors by fans encroachment.

A pulsating encounter it was between the two sides who played for win knowing full well that the outcome of the game could be a defining moment at the end of the season.

It had a goalless affair despite beautiful displays by the two sides and the cagey affair continued in the second half after a couple of changes by the both sides.

As the game was getting to the end, the Flying Antelopes mounted pressure for a goal as a cross came into the box and an infringement was noticed by the centre referee who pointed to the box for the Enugu side's penalty.

However, the People's Elephant players insisted that the referee had made the wrong call and that their defender Pascal Eze had not touched Rangers International striker, Godwin Obaje.

A situation that saw the players of Enyimba leave the pitch as the fans overwhelmed the pitch and leaving the match inconclusive.
