Nigeria And Ghana Renew Rivalry As Falcons Battle Black Queens

Published on: 23 November 2016

The perennial rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana will be renewed today when Super Falcons and Black Queens clash in continuation of the women’s AFCON in Cameroon.

Both teams are gunning for their second wins of the competition after opening day victories – Nigeria smashed past Mali 6-0, while Ghana beat debutants Kenya 3-1.

A win for either of the Group B favourites will most certainly qualify them to the semi-finals of the tournament.

“Today’s match is like a cup final,” declared Nigeria coach Florence Omagbemi.

“We want to defend our title so we will give Ghana all the respect they deserve.

“All the teams in our group qualified for this tournament and they all want what we want – the trophy. So, we cannot afford to underrate any team.

“The match against Ghana will not be a walkover.”

Ghana have maintained they are not scared by the walloping Nigeria handed Mali.

“Nigeria beat Mali 6-0 are we not scared by this scoreline? And I am saying that Ghana could also have beaten Mali even more than six goals. We would have beaten Mali if we had played Mali,” said Black Queens coach Yusif Basigi.

“Who knows the result between Nigeria and Kenya would have been different?

“We all have to secure the maximum points from the opening game and now we will re-strategise for the next game.”
