Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Tottenham Hotspur full-back DeAndre Yedlin, according to the "?Shield's Gazette.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Sunderland, and has now emerged as a target for the relegated Magpies, who will be spending this season in the Championship"?.
Sunderland were willing to take Yedlin up on another loan deal, but with Newcastle offering something permanent, the player is said to be keen on joining them as he doesn't want to be loaned out again.
He has also been linked with Aston Villa, another side which was relegated from the Premier League last season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, bought Jesus Gamez from Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid over the summer, but the 31-year-old defender hasn't featured in a competitive match so far this season.
Daryl Janmaat, Newcastle's chief option at right-back, also did not play in the 1-0 win over Bristol City over the weekend.
Rafa Benitez seems keen on keeping him at St. James', however, and on Monday claimed that only a 'fantastic offer' would see the Dutchman leave the club in this window.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "If someone comes with a fantastic offer, for us or for him, we will analyse everything but, at the moment, he is a player that is in our team, in our squad, and I don't have a problem playing him if it is necessary.
"He's fine, I am fortunate to have a very good group of professional. They train well. Even the ones who know they may leave, train well."
