Congo began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat by Namibia in Group G on Thursday.
The match was goalless at half-time after a balanced opening 45 minutes, but Bethuel Muzeu struck shortly after the restart to give Namibia all three points.
The Diables Rouges had to withstand early pressure from Namibia before growing into the contest. Geltany Bantsiele created Congo’s first opening in the ninth minute, while Christ Makosso also tried his luck as the visitors began to settle.
Congo continued to threaten towards the end of the first half. Domi Massoumou and Christopher Ibayi both had opportunities, but neither was able to hit the target as the sides went into the interval level at 0-0.
Namibia made the breakthrough only two minutes after the restart. Riaan Hanamub delivered a cross into the penalty area and Muzeu rose to head it past the Congo defence and put the hosts in front.
Congo responded by introducing Mons Bassouamina in place of Ibayi. Beni Namboka and Merveil Ndockyt were also brought on as the Diables Rouges looked for a way back into the match.
Despite those changes, Congo struggled to turn their attacking moments into clear chances. Bassouamina came closest when his shot was blocked, while Yvan Ikia Dimi was denied by the Namibian goalkeeper in the 88th minute.
Namibia had one final opportunity to secure the result beyond doubt through Stoffel Witbeen, but he was unable to add a second goal.
The hosts held on for a 1-0 victory, while Congo must recover quickly as their Group G campaign continues. Namibia take the first three points available in the section.
