Mukhamadiev challenges Istiklol to take 'biggest step'

Hisor: FC Istiklol coach Mukhsin Mukhamadiev called on his players to take their "biggest step" ahead of the 2017 AFC Cup final when they face defending champions Air Force Club of Iraq later on Saturday.

Two years ago, the Tajikistan club went all the way to the tournament's showpiece event in their competition debut but lost at home to Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim in a 1-0 defeat in Dushanbe.

In their second AFC Cup Final appearance, though, Mukhamadiev is adamant his players are ready for redemption.

"There are many changes to the team from two years ago, this time all our players have plenty of experience including at the international level," he said.

"We know that, as it is the final, we can't make mistakes in such a game. If we do, we'll lose.

"It's taken us a long time to get here. It has been 11 months of matches and travel. Now our team should make the biggest step in the final."

The final hurdle for the hosts are an Air Force Club side that themselves are looking to create history by becoming just the third team to retain the AFC Cup title, joining Al Faisaly of Jordan and Kuwait SC.

"We have studied Air Force Club's playing style but I don't want to comment on any strengths or weaknesses of their side," Mukhamadiev said.

"We will see how everything pans out in the match itself, but of course, we respect every opponent."

FC Istiklol goalkeeper Nikola Stosic echoed his coach's words and emphasised that the team were ready for Saturday's showdown.

"Air Force Club won the title last year and are back in the final this time around, so we know they are a very good team," said the Serbian custodian.

"But we are well prepared for the game and will try to show good football and win the tournament.

"The team will give our best from the first to last whistle and put everything on the line for our fans to secure victory."

There is no question that the support of the home support will play a key role for FC Istiklol with the coach also acknowledging their importance.

"I ask this from the our fans: Come to the stadium and help us to play good football," added Mukhamadiev.

"It would be a true joy to lift the trophy and we promise you we will play our best to win the AFC Cup."
