Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has identified a new regular role for Arda Guler, with the Turkey international expected to operate in a central midfield pairing.
According to AS, Mourinho believes the 21-year-old should now be used in a deeper position rather than primarily in an advanced role. Guler’s lack of defensive strength and physical power had previously made that deployment appear risky, but the Portuguese manager believes the midfielder has shown he is ready to contribute in a holding position.
Guler has impressed there in recent matches, prompting Mourinho to consider the role a long-term option.
The Real Madrid manager believes Guler’s ability as a deep-lying playmaker can improve the team’s build-up and help the side retain control of possession. His range of passing from deeper areas could also prove particularly useful because of the pace available in Real Madrid’s attacking positions.
Mourinho feels Guler can provide penetrating passes from midfield to release those forwards quickly, while also helping Real Madrid establish attacks more effectively from the back.
The midfielder has scored two goals and provided five assists in 10 matches this season.
