The New York Red Bulls announced Wednesday that center defender Sean Nealis has signed a new three-year deal with an option year.

After US men's national team defender Aaron Long sustained a torn Achilles' tendon in mid-May, the 24-year-old Long Island native has been a backline fixture for the club all season, with his position rising in relevance.

Nealis was drafted in the second round (No. 25) out of Hofstra University and has since established himself as a valuable member of head coach Gerhard Struber's defense. When he starts and plays the full 90 minutes during the 2021 season, he has helped RBNY keep five clean sheets and maintain a 1.00 goals-against average.
