Middlesbrough hopes of gaining promotion to the English Premier League have been handed a boost after Ghana coach Avram Grant dropped winger Albert Adomah for this month's Africa Cup of Nations.
The Boro player, who was part of the Black Stars the provisional 31-man squad for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea, was left out after the squad was pruned down to 26 by the Israeli coach on Sunday.
This means Adomah will now remain at the Riverside outfit in January and help maintain their promotion push to the Premier League.
“The club had received notification of the player’s call for Ghana’s provisional squad, which was due to meet up for training this week before the full squad was confirmed," a Boro statement said.
“But, in an announcement on Sunday, the Ghanaian FA revealed that coach Avram Grant had reduced his provisional squad from 31 to 26 and one of the players to miss out would be Albert.”
Despite Adomah’s omission, Boro will still be represented in the AFCON with Emilio Nsue part of the Equatorial Guinea squad.
The competition begins in Equatorial Guinea on January 17.
