Ghana and Panathanaikos midfielder Michael Essien could be out of action for six weeks as he is set to undergo a groin operation on his troublesome knee.

The 32-year-old former Chelsea and Real Madrid star has left Arthens for Germany where he has been arranged to undergo the knife to correct a groin on a problematic Knee.

Essien joined Panathanaikos from AC Milan earlier this season and was expected to make his competitive debut for the club in their UEFA Champions League third round qualification tie.

The former Liberty Professionals man will now hope for successful surgery that will be devoid of any complications to rejoin the first team for the Greek league season.

He is expected to be out of action for at most six weeks but could return in time to play a part in his sides bid to start the Greek league season on a high.
