The Stade Velodrome is expected to host the first meeting between Senegal and Comoros, with the proposed friendly scheduled for either 3 or 4 October.
Talks between the Senegalese and Comorian football federations are progressing, although several details still need to be finalised before the fixture can be officially confirmed, Afrik-Foot understands.
The proposed match would bring together Senegal’s Lions of Teranga and Comoros’ Cœlacanthes in Marseille at the beginning of October. A source close to the negotiations said the federations were considering a weekend date to maximise attendance.
“On travaille sur les dates du samedi 3 ou du dimanche 4, donc lors d’un week-end, afin que les familles soient nombreuses a profiter de l’evenement”, the source said.
A large Franco-Comorian and Comorian population lives in the Bouches-du-Rhone region, particularly in Marseille, while the city also has a significant Senegalese community.
The match would have added significance for several Senegal players with links to Marseille. Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, Pape Gueye, Edouard Mendy and Bamba Dieng have all previously played for Olympique de Marseille.
The fixture could be even more emotionally significant for a number of Comoros internationals who were born in the city, including Yannick Pandor, Youssouf M’Changama, Kassim M’Dahoma, Faiz Selemani and Bendjaloud Youssouf.
Their participation would depend on selection, however, and not all of those players have been called up since the most recent Africa Cup of Nations.
If completed, the match would be the first ever between Senegal and Comoros. It is expected to take place only days after the opening two qualifying rounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which are scheduled for September.
Senegal, now managed by Patrick Vieira, are due to host Mozambique before travelling to Ethiopia. Comoros will first visit Cameroon and then welcome Namibia.
The proposed fixture comes as Senegal begin a new phase following a difficult World Cup campaign. Their tournament was marked by controversy and ended with a painful 3-2 extra-time defeat by Belgium in the last 32.
The team may also undergo a generational change, following the recent announcement of Cherif Ndiaye’s retirement from international football.
Comoros are also working under a new head coach. Hubert Velud replaced Stefano Cusin in March after the island nation were eliminated in the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Velud’s first matches in charge came during the March FIFA Series. Comoros drew 0-0 with Namibia before losing 1-0 to Kazakhstan, with Namibia winning the subsequent penalty shoot-out 5-4.
The French coach claimed his first victory with the Cœlacanthes in June, when Comoros beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0.
The Marseille fixture remains subject to final agreement between the two federations, but negotiations are understood to be moving in a positive direction. Official confirmation is expected once the date and other organisational arrangements have been settled.
