Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has called for perspective after the club collected only two points from their opening three Ligue 1 matches, insisting: “We have seen teams win trophies after difficult starts.”
PSG have yet to record a victory in the new French league season. Their opening three fixtures have produced two draws and a total of two points, leaving Luis Enrique’s side still searching for their first win of the campaign.
The difficult beginning came after PSG also suffered defeat in the French Super Cup. Before Ligue 1 got under way, they lost to Lens in the contest for the first domestic trophy of the season.
Marquinhos addressed the team’s early difficulties as PSG prepare for their next major test. The defender pointed to the possibility of a turnaround, with the club’s Champions League campaign due to begin on 9 September.
PSG will open their European campaign at home against Slovan. The match is scheduled to kick off at 22:00 Moscow time.
The fixture gives the Paris club an immediate opportunity to change the mood surrounding the team after an unsuccessful start in domestic competition. However, their record in Ligue 1 remains unchanged: three matches played, no wins and two points collected.
Their defeat by Lens in the French Super Cup means PSG have also failed to claim victory in either of the two competitions they have entered so far this season. The Champions League match against Slovan will therefore be their first opportunity to begin that campaign with a positive result.
Marquinhos’ comments reflect the belief that an early setback does not determine the outcome of an entire season. His message comes as PSG prepare to shift their attention from their disappointing league opening to European football.
The defender’s words also acknowledge the contrast between a poor start and the possibility of later success. PSG have not yet won in Ligue 1, but the season remains at an early stage and their next match will come in a different competition, in front of their home supporters.
The immediate task is clear for Luis Enrique’s team: end their wait for a victory when Slovan visit on 9 September. Kick-off will be at 22:00 Moscow time, with PSG beginning their Champions League journey while still looking for their first win of the new season.
